When you’re missing someone you love, going through a tough medical situation, or maybe life just isn’t where you thought it would be by now, this week may not feel like the most wonderful time of the year.
So, what do you do when the holidays don’t feel so merry and bright?
Here are a few thoughts (from #UncrushedBook) that might help.
- Make a plan with your closest people so the most intense days- like Christmas or New Year’s Eve, don’t sneak up on you.
- If holiday activities or gatherings are
sucking the ever-loving life out ofexhausting you- don’t let traditions be the boss of you. It’s OK to do what you love, and let the rest go. Leave an escape vehicle, if you aren’t sure you can/ want to stay till the end of an event.
- If you’re feeling lonely or isolated, tell somebody. We were never intended to fly solo through life’s best or hardest days.
- Make a memory, instead of buying a lot of stuff. Paint pottery together, go ice skating, or take a kid (or yourself) to get sparkly “fairy hair.”
- Take care of you. Getting fresh air, going for coffee, working out, taking a nap, creating something- can spark joy, even on the toughest days. Rest is not a four letter word. [Well actually it is, but not the kind that got you busted in middle school.]
Remember- it’s not going to always feel this way. You are not alone.
One of my favorite promises is this one: “The Lord is close to the broken hearted. He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” (Psalm 34:18)
Wishing you God’s comfort, peace and joy this holiday season.
